Hi, my name is Steve Bjorkman and I am the CEO and founder of Rental Hero. I've had a lot of people ask me how I came up with the idea for Rental Hero, so I decided to tell the story here.
The idea for Rental Hero came from another site that we had created called Realtyzam (www.realtyzam.com), which is basically the same thing as Rental Hero but for real estate agents. Time and time again we would have agents ask us if we had an accounting program that they could use to track their rentals. After hearing it enough times, we finally decided to create Rental Hero.
As long as I can remember, I have always felt that the problem with most accounting software is that it's too complicated and it's built to handle every type of business under the sun. I wanted to create an accounting program that was easy to use that was catered to a specific type of business - in this case rentals.
So the concept was simple...create an ultra easy-to-use accounting software designed around the way rental owners need to track their expenses. Something that was so intuitive and so easy to use that any rental owner could pick it up and instantly know how to use it without any help. And that's exactly what we did!
What you see today is largely the result of user feedback. So as much as I would like to say it was all my idea, it really wasn't. Honestly, most of the credit goes to our users and their continual feedback and suggestions for new features.

Spreadsheets are great, but...trying to use them in place of an accounting program usually creates more work than it's worth. Let me start by saying that I am what most would consider to be a power user when it comes to spreadsheets (using advanced formulas, writing my own macros, etc). It usually works pretty good for accounting at first, but as soon as you have to make changes, create reports, or track multiple rentals you end up spending more time customizing your spreadsheets than it's worth. I know this because that's the way I did it before RentalHero!
You still have to do data entry.
No matter how good your spreadsheet is, that stack of receipts on your desk are not going to enter themselves. Even if you can download your bank statements, you still have to copy and paste everything into categories, which can be brutal if you have alot of transactions. And then how do you split transactions between multiple categories or multiple rentals?
Lack of financial reports.
What do you do for financial reports? Do you give your accountant a giant spreadsheet that he or she has to try to figure out? What happens when you want to look at your financials over a certain date range or over multiple years? How do you handle multiple rentals?
It's not scalable.
What happens when you buy more properties or you need to change or add categories? Depending on the complexity of your spreadsheet it can mean hours of updating formulas or re-doing entire sheets (if you've ever had to do this, you know how painful it can be).
There is a better way
The whole reason we built RentalHero was to solve these exact problems (along with others like storing receipts, keeping notes on properties, etc).
